Thank you! To my family, friends, volunteers, and the voters of District 94,Thank you so much for your time, energy, contributions, support, and votes! The runoff election on Saturday November 17th did not bring the results we hoped for, but for the past 12 months our campaign has been contacted by residents who appreciate having a Democratic choice on the ballot for the first time in over 20 years. The 40% of the voters who came out to support me in that election spoke loudly that the entire district, from the Lake to Canal Street, has to be heard and represented. I am so proud of our district-wide, bipartisan, grassroots campaign, and am encouraged by the responses of my supporters to continue the fight for integrity in government and in campaigns, for fairness, for hard work and the results it brings. The New Challenge On Saturday February 9, 2008 my name will be on the ballot of all Democrats in District 94 for its position on the Democratic State Central Committee, and it will be on the ballot of Democrats in City Council District A for one of the 14 District A positions on the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee (there are 14 from each Council District, for a total of 70 elected seats in Orleans.). My goal is to bring the talent and energy of our grassroots campaign to the local party - bring it into the 21st century and invigorate campaigns with block-by-block door-knocking campaign strategies. There will be three Langhoff names on the ballot and hopefully three Langhoffs will be among the 70 elected parish-wide. Here is a brief summary of my record of effective civic involvement, both before and after the hurricanes of 2005. At the LRA - Langhoff championed local control of Road Home properties Lobbied successfully for homeowners to be “at the table” in the LRA Increased citizen participation in the Road Home program At the City Council – Langhoff successfully defended the Lot Next Door policy. Pioneered new construction policy that emphasizes our need for large-scale trees. Personally distributed 5,100 seedlings for Urban Re-forestation At City Planning – Langhoff protected our Lake Area parks with permanent (P) designation Stopped commercial development opposed by neighborhood New Zoning ordinance centers decision-making in the neighborhood At Office of Recovery Management - Langhoff instituted weekly updates on Harrison Ave Target Zone Honed neighborhood plans into targeted projects Worked in committees to unify the district At the Army Corps of Engineers – Langhoff brought Corps leaders & neighborhood leaders to a shared conversation In our Neighborhoods – After Katrina Langhoff held the first neighborhood gathering Nov. 17 2005 Surveyed Lake Vista to establish viability in 2006 Revitalized the Block Captains program in Mid-City in 2007 Langhoff began participating in Crime Walks January 2007, City Hall Summoned support for restoration of golf at the north end of City Park Political Involvement – Sixteen years of volunteer advocacy in District 94’s public schools established Langhoff as a non-partisan voice for the community’s needs. As a lifelong Democrat, her desire to help create a fairer and more equitable community has guided her community service and her professional life, working with others toward a shared vision of the common good. In 2004 she and her husband Alan established a grassroots network across Louisiana, but concentrating in southeast Louisiana, to build communications among those Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who did not support George Bush’s re-election. They converted this network to a recovery-based email communication after the storms of September 2005. In 2007, Deborah Langhoff, with the support of family and friends jumped ship as a campaign volunteer to become a political candidate herself, to open full debate in a district that had been held for over 32 years by a Republican incumbent. Alan Langhoff was campaign manager and field director for the Langhoff campaigns and 22 year old daughter Megan Langhoff, a recent honors graduate of Fordham University Lincoln Center, wrote press releases, campaign literature, website articles, and position papers for the Langhoff campaigns.
We can continue to work to build the state we deserve. Please vote on February 9 2008 to rebuild the Louisiana Democratic Party.
